In a shocking development, prominent Kenyan opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away due to cardiac arrest in Kerala on Wednesday. The 79-year-old leader was in India undergoing Ayurvedic treatment at a reputed facility in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam district.
According to reports, Odinga collapsed during his morning walk within the premises of the Ayurvedic centre. “He was immediately rushed to a private hospital but was declared dead on arrival,” a hospital spokesperson told PTI.
The facility where he was staying had earlier treated his daughter, helping her regain her vision through Ayurveda. His body is currently at a private hospital, and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) has been informed to complete formalities as per international protocol.
Who Was Raila Odinga?
Born on January 7, 1945, Odinga was a pro-democracy icon and one of Africa’s most influential political figures. A member of Kenya’s Luo tribe, he entered Parliament in 1992 and ran for the presidency five times in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022 claiming he was unfairly denied victory. He served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 under a power-sharing deal following post-election violence.
A passionate Arsenal fan and advocate for peace and democracy, Odinga played a crucial role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
Condolences Pour In
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, calling Odinga “a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.” He praised Odinga’s love for Indian culture and Ayurveda.
Leaders across Africa, including Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed and Kenya’s former Chief Justice David Maraga, hailed him as a true patriot and Pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to democracy, peace, and development.
