“This is the commitment we made”, said the American president. The statement was made during a press conference, the first visit to Japan since Biden took office.
The president’s comment draws attention, as the United States has long pursued a policy of “strategic ambiguity” about whether to intervene militarily to protect Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.
China considers the neighboring nation as its territory. After the American president’s announcement, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the United States should not defend Taiwan’s independence.
Biden made further comments on Beijing’s stance in the region, saying he hoped Russian President Vladimir Putin would pay a price for your invasion of Ukraine, and let this show China what it will face if it invades Taiwan.
For his part, retired admiral of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Yoji Koda, said that the Japanese role in any conflict over Taiwan would allow and contribute to a US operation.
