At least six people were killed and 20 were injured in a shooting that took place this Monday (4) during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, a city in outskirts of Chicago, in the US state of Illinois.

According to statements by Highland Park Police Commander Chris O’Neill, reproduced by CNN, the first information indicated that the shooter would be a young man appearing to have between 13 and 20 years old.

The wounded were transported to hospitals in the region. Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering tweeted that the 4th of July celebrations had been canceled and recommended that people avoid downtown.

“Our community was terrorized by an act of violence that shook deeply. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims at this devastating time,” Rotering said later at a press conference.

A spokesperson for one of the hospitals where the wounded were taken told Reuters that the vast majority of those treated was shot, while the others suffered injuries during the riot and rush triggered by the shooter’s action.
