Presidents and other leaders of countries spoke out this Friday (2) about the attack on the Argentine vice president and former president, Cristina Kirchner on Thursday night (1).
In a quick conversation with journalists, President Jair Bolsonaro said he regretted the attack and recalled the attack he suffered in Juiz de Fora, in 2018. “I’m sorry. The president of Paraguay, Marito Abdo Benítez, also made a statement on social networks: “We join all the voices that repudiate the violence and demand justice”. Guilherme Lasso, president of Ecuador, posted a message of solidarity on Twitter: “We believe in democracy and peace. We reject hatred and violence.”
Cuban dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel published that the government is “dismayed by the assassination attempt” on Cristina. In the same vein, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez highlighted the “support” of the Caribbean country “for her, for the government and for the people” of Argentina.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro, expressed solidarity with Kirchner via Twitter. “It has become a Latin American practice to think that politics is the physical or legal elimination of the opponent, such a practice is pure fascism. Politics must be freedom”, he wrote.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico, gave a daily press conference commenting on the case. “It was something regrettable, reprehensible, but at the same time I would say miraculous, because Cristina is fine,” he declared.
The dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, also spoke out. “We strongly reject this action, which seeks to destabilize the peace of the Argentine brother people,” Maduro wrote on Twitter.
Likewise, Russia made a statement. “Thank God there was no tragedy,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a daily news conference.
Argentine authorities arrested and identified the man who tried to shoot Kirchner. Fernando Andrés Sabag Montiel, 35 was born in São Paulo, the son of an Argentine and a Chilean, and has lived in Argentina since the 1990 ). Montiel had a criminal record for carrying unconventional weapons.
Argentina is experiencing a period of high political tension, and Cristina Kirchner is the subject of an arrest warrant by the Public Ministry in the context of a trial in which she is accused of corruption in the concession of public works during her terms as president (2007-2015).
