President Jair Bolsonaro and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, spoke for the first time since the eastern European country was invaded by Russia, in 13 of February. Zelensky said on Twitter that the telephone dialogue mainly addressed the resumption of exports of grains produced in Ukraine. “I had a conversation with the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, and informed him about the situation at the front. . We discussed the importance of resuming Ukrainian grain exports to avoid a Russian-caused global food crisis. I appeal to all partners to join the sanctions against the aggressor”, wrote the Ukrainian president. Last week, Turkey announced that an agreement has been reached with Ukraine, Russia and the United Nations for the resumption of Ukrainian grain exports across the Black Sea blocked due to the war initiated by the country ruled by Vladimir Putin. According to the Turkish government, the term should be signed this week.
Before the conversation, Bolsonaro had said he would give Zelensky a “solution” to the war, but he did not say what it would be. The Ukrainian president did not comment on the matter, as well as the Brazilian, until the closing of this report.
Bolsonaro has defended a pragmatic stance by Brazil on the war in Ukraine – while he regrets the conflict, he has not adhered to the sanctions imposed on the West on Russia.
He highlighted the importance of maintaining trade with Moscow, mainly the import of fertilizers, and last week he spoke of negotiations to import Russian diesel.
