Ukrainian and Western officials suspect Russia is planning a “dirty bomb” attack ” in Ukraine, as a pretext for a military escalation. In a joint statement, France, the United Kingdom and the United States declared that they believe that the country commanded by Vladimir Putin would prepare a false Ukrainian attack with these nuclear bombs in order to justify a major reprisal.

The West’s position was published in response to allegations made by the Russian Ministry of Defense on the risk of the use of nuclear bombs by the Ukrainians. In a speech on Sunday night (19), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian accusation was a sign that Moscow was planning such an attack and would blame Ukraine. “If Russia calls and says that Ukraine is supposedly preparing something, that means one thing: Russia has already prepared all this,” Zelensky pointed out.

Since Russian forces suffered major battlefield defeats in September, President Vladimir Putin has intensified the war, summoning hundreds of thousands of reservists, announcing the annexation of occupied territory and repeatedly threatening to use nuclear weapons to defend Russian land. This month, Russia began a new campaign using Iranian-made long-range missiles and drones to attack Ukraine’s electrical power and heating before winter.

After carrying out attacks on homes in the neighboring country over the weekend, Russia also announced that it will make an “uncontrolled escalation” in Ukraine.
