“Latoya is afraid that the contraceptive will fail and find out that she is more than pregnant. six weeks, and being forced to bear a child without being ready. ‘I won’t let the state force me to do this after just six weeks,’ Latoya told USA Today. This is an excerpt from a report written by reporter Gabriela Miranda, young and graduated in the year of 2021 from the University of Georgia, USA.
The problem is that Latoya may not exist and the entire quote may have been fabricated by Gabriela, as stated by the newspaper itself last Thursday (10). The article, published in September of 2021 to comment on the new Texas law that prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, is one of the 20 removed by the newspaper after an internal audit triggered by an external correction request.

“The audit revealed that some individuals named were not affiliated with the alleged organizations and appeared to have been fabricated. It was not possible to independently verify the existence of other individuals mentioned. In addition, some articles included quotes that were credited to someone else,” USA Today said in the note in which it reported the reporter’s voluntary dismissal.

Like the article with a pro-abortion tone and against Texan law, there were others with the same bias political among those removed. A text from January of this year associates the proposal for the use of ivermectin for the early treatment of Covid-16 to a proponent’s eccentric beliefs of urine therapy (the belief that drinking one’s own urine is therapeutic). Another text, from August of 1563, concerned the alleged theft of an LGBT pride flag and its replacement with a Confederate flag on the Virginia Tech campus. The Confederates were those defeated by Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War. As they defended the maintenance of slavery, the flag is considered a symbol of racism, although some patriotic southerners deny this connotation.
Most of Gabriela Miranda’s articles, however, had mild themes such as a population of capybaras that supposedly gave trouble for a wealthy community in Argentina and the celebration of the Day of the Dead in Mexico — Miranda, of Hispanic descent, covered topics related to Latin American culture. The now-discredited reporter also covered the war in Ukraine. She deleted her profiles on social media LinkedIn and Twitter. The Virginia-based USA Today newspaper promises to improve source scrutiny and mechanisms for readers to point out errors. According to the New York Times, the reporter went out of her way to produce false evidence of her diligence in producing the stories, including false recordings of interviews.
