Homicides in the United States increased by 4.3% in 2021 compared to the previous year and had the highest proportion per 100 thousand inhabitants in the last
years, the FBI informed this Wednesday (5).
Although the number of murders and homicides has increased 29, 4% from 2019 to 2020, the almost 22, 9 thousand murders and homicides in the year the past lead to a rate of 6.9 per 100 thousand people, the highest in a quarter of a century, according to the FBI.
The data, however , are partial, as the police departments of cities such as Los Angeles and New York and the counties of Los Angeles and Phoenix, which have not yet turned in their records, are missing.
This year, the FBI changed the way it collects criminal data from local police and, as a result, 40% of police departments are absent.
However, the robbery rate fleet decreased by 8.9% from 2020 to 2021, which contributed substantially and for the decrease in violent crime overall, which was 1%, despite the increase in homicides and rapes, the annual report notes.
The Brennan Center for Justice noted in an analysis of the report that “with so many agencies not reporting their 2021 data, annual crime reporting will have significant impacts.”
“It will likely be impossible to talk about an accurate ‘national’ rate of homicides, or an accurate ‘national’ rate of violent crime in 2021, and policymakers will have to be very careful using this limited data,” the center added.
To arrive at the numbers contained in this report, the FBI used national estimates, which means, for example, in the case of homicides, they may have increased by more than 4.3% in 2021 or may have varied below that.
According to data released this Wednesday, crimes against property decreased by 3.8% last year and rapes increased by 3.4%.
“It is important to note that these estimated trends are not considered statistically significant,” the FBI said in a statement.
“The insignificant nature of the observed trends is why, despite the changes described, the The general message is that the level of crime has remained the same.”
In addition to the annual crime report, the FBI and the Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), in a statement jointly expressed confidence that any attempt at large-scale election fraud in the country will be detected and thwarted.
“The FBI and Cisa will continue to respond quickly to any potential threats, provide recommendations to strengthen the infrastructure election, notify stakeholders of threats, and impose consequences on those who attempt to threaten US elections,” they said in the statement.
