Representatives of the US and Chinese governments held a meeting in Luxembourg this Monday (03), despite tensions between the two countries over trade, human rights, the invasion of Ukraine and the relations with North Korea.
In a conference call with To journalists, a senior White House official explained that US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met in Luxembourg with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Foreign Affairs chief Yang Jiechi. The employee described the four-and-a-half-hour conversation between the two as “frank, substantial and productive”.
Among the issues that the US brought to the table was China’s veto at the United Nations of a resolution promoted by the US government that intended to impose more sanctions on North Korea. On Sunday, China dealt a blow to US strategy in the Indo-Pacific and demanded that the US not “contain” or “surround” North Korea. This came after a weekend in which both powers marked territory in that region, when their defense ministers attended a forum in Singapore.
