Thousands of people have to evacuate Sydney, Australia, under threat of flooding

Thousands of inhabitants of the southwest region of Sydney, Australia’s largest city, were ordered to evacuate their homes this Sunday (3), due to torrential rains and strong winds that hit the east coast. According to the forecast of local authorities, the situation is expected to intensify on Sunday night and the flooding in the region could be worse than those recorded in the previous year.

With river dams overflowing along the east coast from Newcastle to Batemans Bay in the state of New South Wales, the risks of floods and landslides.

According to Reuters news agency, more than 200 millimeters of rain fell in several areas, with some reaching 350 millimeters. The Australian Government Department of Meteorology warns of flood risks along the Nepean and Hawkesbury Rivers.

This Sunday alone, there have already been about 2,000 requests for assistance and 29 people rescued from flood waters, including a woman hanging from a pole. The body of a man who fell from a kayak was rescued in Sydney Harbor.
