Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer’s health remains delicate but stable, following a serious on-field injury sustained during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on October 25, 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Iyer is being closely monitored by the team doctor and has now been moved out of the ICU.
According to BCCI’s official statement, Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while taking a diving catch in the cover region to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Subsequent medical scans revealed a laceration to his spleen, causing internal bleeding.

In a medical update, the board said: Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is medically stable and recovering well under treatment.
The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is monitoring his condition. The BCCI also confirmed that Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Indian team’s travelling doctor, will stay in Sydney with Iyer to oversee his recovery.
Recovery and Future Outlook
Sources close to the team revealed that Iyer is out of danger, though he will remain hospitalized for a few more days as a precaution. A family member from Mumbai is expected to fly to Sydney soon, pending visa formalities.
Iyer’s immediate cricket future remains uncertain. The next ODI series against South Africa, scheduled for November 30, December 3, and December 6, will be his next possible assignment if recovery goes as planned.
