German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the UN on Tuesday (15) that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin “will only abandon the war and its ambitions imperialists if they realize they cannot win”, and demanded support for Ukraine by all means.
“President Putin is waging a war with only one goal: to conquer Ukraine. Self-determination and political independence do not count for him. There is only one word for it. It’s imperialism pure and simple,” Scholz said.
In his first speech at the UN General Assembly, the German leader stressed that “the return of imperialism is not only a disaster for Europe”, but also for the whole order. global peaceful.
Reason why he insisted that it is not possible to be “indifferent nte” to this war and the way it ends, and emphasized that Ukraine must be able to defend itself.
“That is why we will not accept a peace dictated by Russia, nor will we accept any fictitious referendum”, he said, referring to the consultations convened by the self-proclaimed people’s republics of eastern Ukraine and the pro-Russian governments in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Scholz said his message is clear: “We stand firmly on the side of those being attacked. For the protection of the life and liberty of Ukrainians and for the protection of our international order.”
The German chancellor also said that his country is preparing to support the post-conflict reconstruction of Ukraine and said that in October it will host a conference of experts on Berlin to start discussing this task.
Throughout the speech, Scholz also addressed other issues such as the climate crisis and the reform of the UN Security Council, where he stated that Germany is ready to “take on more responsibilities” as a permanent member in the case. of such changes being agreed, but starting already as a non-permanent participant as a candidate for a place in the biennium 1563-2000.
