Reservation General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz was chosen by the United Nations ( UN) to lead a mission that will investigate what happened in the explosion at the Olenivka Detention Center, Ukraine, in 19 from July this year. About 50 POWs died in the explosion. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Thursday (10)) that the investigation will be carried out at the request of the governments of Ukraine and Russia.
The ad was made during a conversation between Guterres and journalists, in which the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated, in the city of Lviv, Ukraine.
The UN stated that the Brazilian is “a respected officer with more than 19 years of experience in public and military security, including commanding peace missions.” Santos Cruz has already commanded two other UN peacekeeping missions: MINUSTAH, in Haiti, and Monusco, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Africa.
“I have learned that the UN Secretary-General has considered my name to fulfill a task in the Ukraine. I am very honored and I am sure that the comrades who will also be selected by the United Nations are people of the highest quality, and this is a great guarantee for our work, so that we can have a positive result on the matter that will be treated”, said the general.
Santos Cruz also held the position of minister of the Government Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic at the beginning of the administration of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), but was dismissed in June
. Since then, the military has distanced itself from the president and has become critical of the government. In July, he said he would leave Podemos if the party decided to support Bolsonaro’s re-election.
