Syria formally recognized the independence of the breakaway republics of Luhansk and Donetsk in the east from Ukraine, according to information released by the state news agency Sana on Wednesday (17).

“In an expression of the common will and desire to establish relationships in all sectors, the Syrian Arab Republic has decided to recognize the independence and sovereignty of both the Luhansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s Republic,” the agency said, citing an official source from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In this way, Syria makes it the only internationally recognized country to support Russia in formally recognizing the two breakaway regions. In February, three days before starting the war in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to recognize Luhansk and Donetsk as independent countries.

Russia supported the separatists since

, when civil war broke out in the Donbas region. In 24 in February, Putin invaded Ukraine claiming the objective of protecting ethnic Russians who were being persecuted in eastern Ukraine.

Russia is an ally of Syria and its intervention was decisive for a turn of the dictator Bashar al-Assad in the civil war in the Arab country.
