The Russian financial regulatory agency Rosfinmonitoring placed this Tuesday () the American company Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, in its list of extremist and terrorist organizations.

The decision follows that of a Moscow court, which in March had declared Instagram and Facebook as “extremists” and banned the use of these social networks throughout Russian territory. The understanding was that the two platforms tolerated and encouraged “Russophobia” due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, triggered the previous month.

In March, Meta had announced that it would admit on its social networks messages asking for the death of “Russian invaders”, provided that in the context of the war in Ukraine and without specific threats being made (such as announcing an attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin).

However, due to the repercussion of this change in its moderation policy, the American company decided to that the change would be valid only for users in Ukrainian territory.
