The Russian Parliament approved this Thursday (20) amendments to the press law, which allow the Attorney General’s Office to close foreign media, under the allegation of broadcasting fake newson the constitution and army of the country.
“The document grants the Prosecutor General the right to directly prohibit or limit the activities in Russia of foreign vehicles, in the case of the detection of actions non-friendly practices of that foreign state against Russian media abroad”, as indicated by the Chamber of Deputies, in a statement.
The law allows the activities of press vehicles to be interrupted for a maximum period of three months, if the publication of “illegal and dangerous information, including socially significant news, which express an evident disrespect for society, the State and the Constitution”.
In addition, the work of the means may be interrupted if they “discredit the Russian Armed Forces or are linked to the imposition of sanctions by Foreign States”.
From this, the communications regulatory body of the former Soviet republic, Roscomnadzor, will have to include the corresponding data in the register of accredited media in Russia to warn media representatives about the stoppage of activities. If there is a recurrence of the alleged violation, the next measure would be a suspension of six months.
Also according to Parliament, if the vehicle repeatedly disseminates information classified as false, the registration in Russia will be invalidated and the medium blocked.
