Russian troops attacked Mariupol with long-range missiles, using this resource for the first time since the beginning of the war, according to the spokesman of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, said on Friday. Strategic Mariupol, close to the Sea of Azov, is one of the main objectives of the Russians in their effort to gain full control of the Donbas region and form a land corridor in the east of the country from the annexed Crimea peninsula. Motuzyank also said that street fighting continued in Mariupol, for example at the Illich steelworks near the port. With this, the spokesperson contradicts the Russian version according to which the steel mill would already be under full control of the invaders.
