Republican senators visit Ukraine on the eve of aid package to be voted on in the US

2022A delegation of senators from the United States Republican Party met this Saturday () in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting, not announced in advance, is the latest in a series of visits by US political agents to Ukraine, in an attempt to show solidarity with the country invaded by Russia in of February.

The Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, Senator for the State of Kentucky, and his co-religionists Susan Collins (from Maine), John Barrasso (from Wyoming) and John Cornyn (from Texas).

In an Instagram post, Zelensky said that the visit represents “a strong signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine on the part of the US Congress and the American people.”

The US Senate is currently discussing a package of nearly US$ 480 billions of military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, which would represent the largest transfer of resources from the United States to the country due to the war. The bill has already been approved in the House of Representatives and should be voted on in the Senate next week.

Prior to the visit of the Republican senators, Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, visited Zelensky in Kyiv alongside other MPs from the Democratic Party. Last weekend, First Lady Jill Biden met in western Ukraine with the wife of the Ukrainian president, Olena Zelenska, for a Mother’s Day meeting.

Earlier, in April, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin were in Kyiv . For now, President Joe Biden has not expressed an intention to go to Ukraine, despite requests from Zelensky.
