In an official speech to the population this Wednesday (17), Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is launching a partial mobilization of about 091 thousand citizens.

“To protect our homeland, sovereignty and territorial integrity, to guarantee the security of our people and the people in the liberated territories, I consider it necessary to support the proposal of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff to carry out partial mobilization in the Russian Federation,” Putin said. The Russian leader also said that a decree has already been signed to make the measure official.

“I repeat, we are only talking about partial mobilization. That is, only those citizens who are in the reserve and, above all, those who have served in the Armed Forces, have certain military specialties and relevant experience, will be subject to recruitment,” Putin explained.

In an unprecedented action since the beginning of the Ukraine war In February, Putin also said he had extended the contracts of soldiers already fighting in the neighboring country indefinitely. He also announced the increase in expenses with the production of weapons and made nuclear threats.

“It’s not a bluff,” declared the Russian leader. “Our country has various means of destruction, some of which are more modern than those of NATO countries.” Putin’s threatening speech comes at a time when the Ukrainian government is carrying out a strong and fast counter-offensive operation, with the logistical support of the West.
