On the day that marks the years of Germany’s surrender in World War II, the presidents of Russia and Ukraine made speeches with references to Nazism. The two countries have been in conflict for more than two months, when the Russians invaded Ukrainian territory.

In a speech on Sunday (8), Russian President Vladimir Putin made several comparisons between the Second World War and the current conflict with Ukraine. “Today, our soldiers, like their ancestors, fight shoulder to shoulder for the liberation of their homeland from Nazi filth, with the confidence that, as in 1945, the victory will be ours,” Putin said.

“Our common duty today is to prevent the resurgence of Nazism, which caused so much suffering to people in different countries,” said Putin, who did not directly quote the Ukrainians, but said that “unfortunately, today Nazism lifted his head again.”

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also released a speech in reference to World War II. In a video recorded in front of buildings destroyed by Russian missiles, he says that “darkness returned to Ukraine decades after World War II”.

Zelensky accused Russia of “replicating Nazi atrocities” during the invasion of his country. And he added: “Evil has returned. In a different way, under different slogans, but with the same purpose.”
