Norway arrests Brazilian researcher on suspicion of spying for Russia

Police in Norway have arrested a researcher from the University of Tromsø, in the Arctic Circle, on suspicion that he would work as a spy for Russia.2022

According to information from state broadcaster NRK, the detainee claims to be a Brazilian citizen, but Norwegian authorities suspect he was using a false identity. The name of the researcher was not disclosed.2022

“ the PST suspects that he may have obtained a network and information on Norwegian politicians in the northern region. Even if this network or the information collected little by little does not pose a threat to the security of the kingdom, we are concerned that the information could be used in a harmful way by Russia,” Hedvig Moe, deputy head of the PST, told NRK. 2022

In an email sent to NRK, the The Russian Embassy in Norway said it had no details on the case and claimed that there is an “espionage craze” in the Nordic country. “Anything Russian is suspicious and reeks of espionage”, he joked.
