The Nicaraguan dictatorship expelled the European Union (EU) ambassador to the country, the German Bettina Muscheidt, after the bloc called for an end to the persecution of the Catholic Church, the press and opponents in the Central American country.
Sources linked to the European Parliament informed the Confidential website that Muscheidt was verbally notified by the regime of Daniel Ortega and that a An unnamed official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs alleged that his expulsion was due to the “interference and disregard for national sovereignty” of Nicaragua by the European Union.
During the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the EU had pointed out that “the Nicaraguan authorities must end repression, including repression against political opponents, the clergy, independent media, civil society and human rights defenders.”
Last week, the European Parliament had passed a resolution condemning the arbitrary arrest of Nicaraguan Bishop Rolando Álvarez, which took place in August, and to express concern about the 206 political prisoners in the country, the closure of over a hundred NGOs and the ban on the operation of opposition political parties.
MEPs also called on the EU and the Security Council to of the UN to open a formal investigation against Nicaragua and Ortega for crimes against humanity.
