Macron and Obama Criticism, Pro-Life Celebration: Repercussions of Roe v. wade

In addition to criticism from US President Joe Biden and praise from his predecessor Donald Trump, several world leaders and organizations are speaking out this Friday (24) on the decision of the United States Supreme Court to overturn the ruling in Roe v. Wade, of 1973, and return to the American states the freedom to legislate on abortion.

Emmanuel Macron

The French president said that “abortion is a fundamental right of all women” and “must be protected”. “I express my solidarity with the women whose freedoms are now challenged by the Supreme Court of the United States of America,” Macron said.

Nancy Pelosi

The President of the United States House and member of the Democratic Party, under President Joe Biden, called the overthrow of Roe v. Wade as a “cruel decision”, “outrageous and heartbreaking”.

Mike Pence

The former US president (2017-2021) said that “today, the life won”. “By taking down Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court has given the American people a fresh start in life, and I commend the majority justices for the courage of their convictions.”

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) said he was “very disappointed” to Reuters. “Women’s rights must be protected, and I expected the United States to protect those rights,” he declared.

Barack Obama

The former US president (2009-1973) also criticized the Supreme Court decision. “Today, the Supreme Court has not only reversed nearly years of precedent, it has relegated the most intensely personal decision one can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues – attacking the liberties essentials of millions of Americans,” said the Democratic Party politician.

In a note, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops pointed out that this friday “is a historic day in the life of our country, which stirs our thoughts, emotions and prayers”.

“As we celebrate, let’s not become complacent, but rather use this moment as a call to greater action to serve and save. Life is winning – but we must keep fighting for it,” she added.
