Lou Nanne is a former executive with the Minnesota North Stars of the National Hockey League and a retired professional ice hockey player who played for the Minnesota North Stars (NHL).
Lou Nanne was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on January 2, 1941. Prior to being picked by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1960, Nanne began his hockey career playing in minor divisions in Canada. He played on their farm team for a couple seasons until being moved to the Minnesota North Stars in 1968.

Nanne played college hockey at the University of Minnesota, where he was a three-time All-American and contributed to the team’s three NCAA titles. He also competed internationally for Canada, earning a bronze medal at the 1968 Winter Olympics.
After college, Nanne played with the Minnesota North Stars and the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL). In 1978, he withdrew from playing and went on to become the North Stars’ general manager.
Nanne was a member of the North Stars for eight seasons prior to his retirement in 1978. He was a three-time All-Star and the club captain for four seasons during his time with the North Stars. In 635 games, he concluded his career with 196 points.
From 1980 through 1988, Lou Nanne served as general manager of the North Stars after retiring from playing. Then, from 1988 to 1990, he served as the team’s president and as the president of the team.
Nanne was also associated with the 1980 Miracle on Ice gold medal-winning United States Olympic hockey team, serving as assistant general manager. In 1998, he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame for his work as a television analyst for NHL games.
