The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, accused this Friday () the European Union (EU) and NATO to create a coalition for a war against the country, just as Hitler did against the Soviet Union in World War II.

“They are creating a new coalition for the struggle, that is, for the war with Russia. We will follow this very closely,” Lavrov told a news conference in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

Lavrov stated that this alleged coalition “remembers when World War II began and Hitler gathered under his banner a significant part of European countries for the struggle with the USSR”. He even said that there is a “Russophobic EU infection” that should remain in the long term.

The minister also emphasized that the EU is not “a political-military bloc”, unlike NATO, and therefore its decision to forge relations with other countries does not create “any risk or threat” for the Russia. But he criticized the alliance for “trying to force” countries that have been granted candidate status to support the joint foreign policy “without exception”. On Thursday (), the EU granted the title official of candidates for entry into the alliance to Ukraine and Moldova.
