Even though there are only three fight scenes in Kaatera, Tharun’s creative ideas for them keep us on the edge of our seats. The director will get better at what he does over time. The script gives Darshan’s “actor” enough room to do his thing. Darshan is very convincing, whether he is talking about how helpless Kaatera is or how the farmers should rise up against unfairness.
The debutant Aradhana Ram (the daughter of actor Malashree) does a great job in a part that has a lot of depth. With a three-hour runtime, Kaatera might make you a little tired. The movie could have done without one of the two duets. The other problem is that the movie’s ending is too easy.
That’s possible these are the risks of being an old-fashioned business entertainer. But Kannada needs simple, well-made “masala” potboilers like these to keep the business in check. Darshan’s Kranti, which came out at the beginning of the year, didn’t do well because it was hard to balance message and fun. Kastera doesn’t make the same mistake again. The bad guys are one-dimensional and pre-made, but that doesn’t change the mood of the movie because it’s a commercial comedy between good and evil. The best thing about Kaatera is the content, which is earthy, raw, and rooted and tries to get a point across.
In the 1970s, director Tarun Sudhir looks at casteism, honor killing, slavery, and other issues. He also sheds light on an old “Holemari” tradition. The writer Jadesh Kumar Hampi should be praised for shedding light on this subject. The conversation in Masti is good, but there were times when it needed more power. The music by V. Harikrishna stands out in scenes with a lot of people. BGM is one of Kaatera’s hidden heroes. Pasandagavne and the title track are the album’s humdingers. There are some great action scenes, especially one in the second part.

Kaatera (Darshan Thoogudeepa), who is out on parole, is going home for his village holiday with a police officer (Achyut Kumar). After an attack that killed someone, Kaatera tells the police officer about his past. Kaatera was a weaponsmith in Bheemanahalli in the 1970s. He was known for being honest and brave. Prabhavati (Aradhana Ram), who was from a different family, was his love. At the same time, the farmers of Bheemanahalli were sick of the terrible things that feudalists Devaraya and Kaalegowda (Jagapathi Babu and Vinod Alva) were doing. The locals are glad to see the Land Reforms Act because they think it will help them get away from Devaraya and Kaalegowda. Kaatera becomes the messiah for the people. The length of Kaatera is one of the main things that keeps it from being a great movie. There is a lot of information in three hours, which is too long for this picture. On the edit table, the first part could have been changed more.
The first few minutes of the movie slow down with two duo songs by Darshan and Aradhana that play right after each other. After slowly getting to know all the key characters over the course of about an hour, the movie finally takes off.
Also, some scenes with women (Aradhana and Shruthi) needed to be handled with a little more care. The ending is a bit preachy and tries to send a message, which Darshan’s “mass fans” might not like.
