In the first operation of this nature carried out by the United States since the visit to Taiwan by the president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, two US Navy warships sailed through international waters in the Taiwan Strait this Sunday (20).

The US Navy confirmed information obtained by the Reuters agency and pointed out that the cruisers Chancellorsville and Antietam carried out the operation. “These ships transited a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state,” the United States Navy reported.

The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese armed forces reported that it monitored the operation.

In early August, Nancy Pelosi , from the Democratic Party, visited Taiwan, which drew criticism from China and allies, as Beijing understands that the island is a rebellious Chinese province and that direct diplomatic relations constitute interference in the country’s internal affairs.

In response, China carried out the largest military exercises in history in the Taiwan region. The United States carried out maneuvers in the Indo-Pacific and reiterated commitments to defend the island.

A few days later, China announced new movements in the area due to the arrival of a delegation of American parliamentarians (Republicans and Democrats) in Taipei. Last week, Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn was also on the island.
