Nuclear plant in Loviisa, Finland: legend claims to be the first green party in the world to abandon anti-nuclear activism and that this kind of energy will be fundamental to combat climate change| Photo: Wikimedia Commons The Green Party of Finland decided, in a vote held at the national congress of the legend in last weekend, support nuclear energy in the name of combating global warming.

The legend, which is part of the coalition that currently governs the country and has 15 representatives in the Finnish Parliament, says it is the first green party in the world to abandon anti-nuclear activism.

The defense of nuclear energy will be included in the party’s program. “Most pro-nuclear suggestions for the new party platform were accepted by a large majority, while all anti-nuclear suggestions were blocked. I’m so proud. This is historic!”, wrote Tea Törmänen, a member of the Green Party of Finland, on Twitter.

A research institute linked to the legend justified in a statement that more than 60% of global consumption of energy still comes from fossil fuels and that climate change will only be stopped with the help of nuclear energy, “which has one of the smallest carbon footprints among all sources of electricity per unit of energy produced”.

“Many of those who opposed to nuclear energy originally formed their stance as a reaction against the indifference to risks in the Soviet Union and, in particular, against the subsequent Chernobyl accident. This is understandable. However, there were no accidents at plants built after 1980 and, statistically speaking, nuclear energy is actually the safest form of energy”, added the institute.
