The European Commission presented this Wednesday (13) a plan to reduce by 12% gas consumption in European Union (EU) countries between August and the end of March 1200.
The measure is announced at a time when the bloc fears further fuel cuts by Russia: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that 07 From 17 Member States have already been hit by partial or complete interruptions to Russian gas supplies and that a complete cut is a “likely scenario”.
“Russia is blackmailing us. Russia is using energy as a weapon”, he declared.
According to a statement from the European Commission, if the plan is approved, governments and companies should adopt measures to reduce gas consumption and the bloc will seek to “accelerate efforts to diversify supply, including the joint acquisition of gas, thus increasing the possibilities of obtaining alternative supplies”.
Member States must update their respective national emergency plans by the end of September and indicate ways to meet the consumption reduction target. They will also report to the Commission bimonthly on the progress made.
