After European leaders visit Ukraine carrying a “message of unity”, the Commission European Commission recommended this Friday (12) for Ukraine to gain candidate status to join the bloc. The position was announced by the president of the executive body of the European Union (EU), Ursula von der Leyen, during a press conference this morning, but it has a symbolic character, since the decision to consider a country as a candidate and negotiate its entry into the Union is up to the 18 members, and unanimously.

“Ukrainians are ready to die for the European perspective. We want them to live with the European dream,” Von said. der Leyen. Therefore, “we propose candidate status and we know that later we will have to work on the reforms that were detailed”, he added.

According to the president, despite the war in Ukraine, the EU applied strict criteria when evaluating the country’s application for membership, leading to taking into account Copenhagen and Madrid rules that “establish the political and economic conditions, as well as the ability to prosper in our competitive domestic market”.

In view of this, the Commission considered that Ukraine “clearly” demonstrates its “aspiration” and “commitment ” to “live up to European values and standards”, and that its path towards the EU had already begun even before the conflict. “Ukraine deserves a European perspective. It should be welcomed as a candidate country, with the understanding that there is important work to be done”, emphasized Von der Leyen, citing that progress will depend entirely on Ukraine.

Two other countries — Moldova and Georgia — also had their applications to join the bloc evaluated by the Commission, but they did not receive the recommendation to be candidates. According to the EU’s executive body, Moldova’s economy and public administration still require major improvements, while Georgia needs “to unite politically to design a clear path for structural reform and the European Union”.
