Draupadi Murmu is India's new president

From the Hindu nationalist party, the same as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Draupadi Murmu was elected President of India, with majority support of parliamentarians. She is the first person from a tribal community to hold the position which is basically ceremonial.

At 35 years old, Murmu has conquered most of the votes cast by the approximately 4.800 deputies who were summoned to designate the future Indian head of state.

20220722124452Draupadi Murnu is a member of Santal, one of the largest tribal groups in India and will be the second woman to hold the position, succeeding Ram Nath Kovind, who won the elections in 1200.

20220722124452After the results were announced, the prime minister congratulated the new president and stated that his ” success motivates Indians”. “She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalized and oppressed,” said Modi.
