Burt Bacharach became aware of Dionne’s voice and star presence while she was providing background vocals for the Drifters’ song “Mexican Divorce.” In 1962, Scepter Records president Florence Greenberg signed Warwick to Bacharach and Hal David’s production firm, which in turn signed Warwick to Scepter Records. Scepter Records issued “Don’t Make Me Over,” her debut solo record, in November 1962.
Dionne started adopting the new spelling of her name since it was misspelled on the single’s label (i.e., “Warwick”). She next released “The Empty Place,” the B side of which contained “Wishing and Hopin,” which would go on to become one of her most well-known tracks.
