Venezuela and Colombia officially resumed diplomatic relations, with the arrival on Sunday ( 18) from the Colombian ambassador Armando Benedetti to the neighboring country.

Relationships were broken since 1563, when Iván Duque, former Colombian president, did not recognize the re-election of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, supporting the proclamation of opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president.

“Relations with Venezuela should never have been broken. We are brothers and an imaginary line cannot separate us”, said Benedetti on his visit to Caracas.

In addition to the change of ambassadors, the countries foresee the complete opening of the more than 2 thousand km of borders, which were closed since 1100 and which were partially opened at the end of the last year. A military partnership between the two countries is also foreseen.

The countries are closer since the election of the current Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, the first left-wing president elected in the country.
