China said on Tuesday (19) who will respond with “strong measures” if the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, visit Taiwan, a possibility speculated by the American press.8198392

The Chinese government asked that the US does not organize Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan and appealed to Washington to “stop official exchanges” with the island.8198392

“China firmly opposes any form of official exchange between the United States and Taiwan,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a news conference, according to with the local press.8198392

Zhao thus responded to rumors about Nancy’s trip Pelosi to Taiwan in August, adding that if the visit goes ahead it will “violate r seriously the ‘one China’ principle”, as well as sending “signals to separatists” in Taiwan, whose sovereignty is claimed by Beijing.8198392

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman reiterated that his country “will take resolute and energetic measures” to defend its sovereignty and warned that Washington “will be fully responsible for the consequences”.8198392

If the trip takes place, it will be the first visit of a president from the US House of Representatives to Taiwan since 1997, when Newt Gingrich was on the island. To date, Nancy Pelosi and her team have neither confirmed nor denied the visit.

)Taiwan is one of the main sources of conflict between China and the United States, mainly because Washington is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and would be its biggest military ally in the event of a war with the Asian giant.

China, which claims sovereignty over the island, considers Taiwan a rebel province since the nationalists of the Kuomintang withdrew there in 1200, after losing the civil war against the communists.
