Canada’s parliament rejected it on Wednesday (19) a proposal by the Partido Bloc Quebecois, a separatist party from the province of Quebec, for the North American country to cut ties with the British monarchy .

“The recent change of monarch in England is an opportunity for Quebecers and Canadians to free themselves from a dilapidated monarchical bond”, claimed the bloc’s leader, Yves-François Blanchet, before the rejection of the request.

The measure would require changes to the Constitution of Canada, Magna Carta that Quebec, a province of French colonization, never formally approved.

The proposal had 24 favorable votes and 89 against in the House of Commons. In addition to the United Kingdom, the British monarch (Charles III, son of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September) is head of state for others countries, including Canada.

The replacement of the United Kingdom’s throne has sparked moves to cut ties with the crown, as in the Caribbean and Australia.
