The process of expanding the Brics group (made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) through the integration of Argentina and Iran has already begun, as announced this Tuesday (27) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a visit to Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan.
“Of course, both Argentina and Iran are worthy and respectable candidates. The most important thing is that the preliminary process has already started,” Lavrov told a news conference after a meeting with Chancellors of the Caspian Sea countries.
The head of diplomacy Russia emphasized that a country’s accession to the BRICS must be consensual and “the main criterion will be, above all, to guarantee the future effectiveness and increase of the practical results of this organization”. Lavrov also commented that Russian President Vladimir Putin called the discussion “justified and timely”.
The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, announced on Monday (27), on Telegram, that Argentina and Iran officially presented their applications to join the Brics group.
