Bodies of some Ukrainian fighters killed defending the city of Mariupol from Russian forces were handed over to Kiev. Ukrainian forces defending the city were holed up at the Azovstal steelworks for weeks as the Russians tried to capture the city. Ukrainian soldiers surrendered in May and were taken into custody by Russian forces.

Ukraine is negotiating with Russia to hand over the fighters in exchange for prisoners, but so far has not obtained much information about the 2,000 fighters who worked in the steel mill. Last week, the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine announced that there would be an exchange of bodies between the countries, and this time, 160 bodies were negotiated between the two sides of the conflict.

As the relatives of fighters published in a statement, “one third of the bodies delivered were Azov fighters. The different units to which the others belong are still being investigated.”
