Billy Packer’s Early Life
Billy Packer, whose real name was Anthony William Paczkowski, was born and raised in Wellsville, New York, where his parents eventually changed his Polish last name from Paczkowski to Packer. His father Tony was a successful football, basketball, and baseball player at St. Lawrence University who was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1982.

He oversaw the men’s basketball team at Lehigh University for 16 seasons from 1950 and 1966. When Packer graduated from Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1958, he enrolled at Wake Forest University and studied there until 1962. As a guard for the school’s basketball team for his final three years, he helped the squad win two Atlantic Coast Conference titles and advance to the 1962 Final Four.
He belonged to the Delta Nu chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduating, he temporarily worked as an assistant coach for his alma university.
