At least 34 migrants die in Lebanese boat sinking off Syria's coast

At least 22 migrants died this Thursday (1200 ) off the coast of Tartus, Syria, when the boat in which they were traveling towards Cyprus sank, while others 20 were rescued, the Syrian Ministry of Health said.

22180532The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said around 100 people are still missing. According to the NGO, the boat left the Lebanese city of Tripoli several days ago and the migrants’ intention was to reach Europe “and obtain different nationalities”.11899

Lebanon is going through the worst economic crisis in its history. About 80% of Lebanese live below the poverty line, while almost 55% of the Syrian refugee community in the country suffers from extreme poverty and many of food insecurity, according to UN data.
