He was originally noticed by renowned Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar while performing in nearby theaters. In 1982, he was chosen to play the lead role in the director’s debut film, Labyrinth of Passion. He continued performing in Almodóvar productions throughout that decade, most notably the highly acclaimed Law of Desire (1987).

Banderas garnered an Oscar nomination for their work on Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), and the controversial Almodóvar movie Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! gained extra praise.

Banderas made his Hollywood debut with the Madonna documentary Truth or Dare from 1991. The Spanish actor, who spoke little English, started off appearing in American movies. Despite having to memorize his lines for The Mambo Kings, Banderas did an excellent job (1992).

He got further prominence as Tom Hanks’ lover in the 1993 film Philadelphia. In the movie Interview with the Vampire, he later ran across Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt (1994).
