Director General of the Cell Operators Association of India (COAI) and retired Lieutenant General Dr. SP Kochhar.
CEO of COAI, the umbrella body for telecommunications operators, affirms the future of 5G in the country
With the advent of 5G, the speed of our mobile internet will not only increase but also increase the industrial productivity of the country by about 10 times. How important is this year for 5G technology? What are we currently doing in the country? To find the answers to these questions, Pramod Trivedi of Bhaskar appealed to the CEO of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and retired Lieutenant General Dr. SP Parlé in Kochhar. Read the highlights of the conversation …
Question: How will 5G service change people’s lives?
Dr. SP Kochhar: 4G is used more for personal use, not 5G. People will have more internet speed in 5G, but 5G will be used more in industries. The 5G conversion will be done from machine to machine. It will bring an industrial revolution in the industry. Robotic work will happen. Plans like Smart City can be made quickly. Industrial productivity will increase several times on average.
Question: What are the preparations for the 5G handset?
Dr. SP Kochhar: Right now, 5G handsets are expensive. We are also looking to get a cheap and affordable 5G smartphone. He has to reach people. We’re trying to get the price of the 5G phone to be 8-10,000. We’re working on it.
Question: Will 5G service be launched in the country in 2021?
Dr. SP Kochhar: There will be a trial of 5G this year, but it is unlikely to be launched on a commercial level. Currently, the government has not decided on the spectrum auction for 5G. The price will be decided after the auction, the network and devices for 5G will be installed. Only then can the 5G network be launched. If all goes well, one or two companies could launch ads this year.
Question: What will change in telecoms in 2021?
Dr. SP Kochhar: As always, we will try to provide the subscriber with a good installation at an affordable price. Considering the way the base price for the spectrum auction was set in March, the fees are unlikely to be reduced at this time, but tax breaks are being discussed with the government. If it is found, there will be a price difference. Data may be cheaper if there is a cost difference.
Question: Will the tax breaks benefit users or businesses?
Dr. SP Kochhar: Users will greatly benefit from reduced taxes. Taxes should be reduced as a necessary service. This will give people the best internet at the right price. We must see that the levies and taxes levied on telecommunications are nationalized and reduced.
Question: What type of tax exemption do you want?
Dr. SP Kochhar: Telecom is taxed at around 40%. From a tax perspective, the telecommunications industry is not seen as a necessary service, which is not appropriate. All things like spectrum fees, license fees, USO funds apply to us. We insist that it be reduced.
