26/11 Mumbai Attacks: India Marks 17 Years Since the Darkest Night of Terror

Nation Pays Tribute to Martyrs as Memorial Events Highlight ‘Neverever’ Theme: This year marks 17 years since the Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists unleashed unprecedented terror on the streets of Mumbai, India’s financial capital, on November 26, 2008.

Commonly known as the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the coordinated assault by 10 heavily armed terrorists shook the nation and the world. Arriving through the sea route late on November 26, the attackers targeted some of Mumbai’s busiest and most iconic locations. Over the next four days, 166 innocent lives were lost and more than 300 people were injured.

26/11 Mumbai Attacks

A Night That Changed India Forever

The terrorists chose high-footfall, high-impact sites frequented by foreign nationals and Mumbai’s working population. These included: Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Nariman House (Jewish Centre), Cama Hospital, Metro Cinema Junction, Leopold Café.

The horror of those four days left scars that remain visible even today bullet marks at Leopold Café and Nariman House, memorials across South Mumbai, and the bust of ASI Tukaram Omble, who sacrificed his life while capturing the sole surviving terrorist, Ajmal Amir Kasab.

Nine of the 10 LeT terrorists were killed. Kasab was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to death in 2010. He was executed in Pune’s Yerwada Jail in 2012.

India’s Continued Resolve Against Terrorism

The anniversary of 26/11, especially in the aftermath of the November 10 Delhi blast, serves as a stark reminder of India’s strengthened national security framework and its zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, NSG Mumbai will hold a solemn memorial and pledge ceremony today at the Gateway of India, under the theme ‘Neverever’, honouring the martyrs, survivors, and victims of the attack. The event reinforces the nation’s collective resolve that such an incident must never ever be allowed to recur.

Memorial Events Across Mumbai

A special memorial zone will showcase:

  • Photographs and names of the fallen heroes

  • Floral tributes and candles

  • A unique ‘Living Memorial’, created from the wax of tribute candles and preserved for future observances

Furthermore, 11 colleges and 26 schools across Mumbai will conduct pledge ceremonies under the ‘Neverever’ theme, encouraging young citizens to commit to peace, vigilance, and national security. As night falls, the Gateway of India will be illuminated in the Tricolour, displaying the word ‘Neverever’ as a tribute to the martyrs.

NIA Seeks New Inputs from the US in Tahawwur Rana Case

In a recent development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sought fresh details from the United States government regarding Tahawwur Rana, one of the key accused in the 26/11 conspiracy.

The request was made in October through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), according to sources. These additional queries were raised months after Rana’s extradition and interrogation, and are expected to aid further investigation into the Mumbai terror plot.

A Day of Remembrance and Renewed Vigilance

Seventeen years later, the pain of 26/11 continues to resonate deeply with the families of victims, the survivors, and every Indian who witnessed those dark days. Today’s commemorations serve not only as a tribute but also as a powerful reminder of India’s resilience and commitment to ensuring such an attack never happens again.
